There will certainly be quite a few brands launching new movements in the first half of 2025, but if I could only name one, it would definitely be the new Calatrava Eight-Day Power Reserve watch (Model: 5328G-001) from the “King of Watches” Patek Philippe, equipped with an instantaneous day and date display, and the new 31-505 8J PS IRM CI J manual-winding movement inside. The watch features a classic 41mm round case in white gold, but both its construction and dial layout are truly captivating. The blue, textured dial, with a black gradient fading to black, is accented by white gold applied numerals and needle-shaped hour and minute hands coated with white luminescent material. The dial's vertical layout creates a striking sense of symmetry.
A small subdial below 12 o'clock displays the power reserve, while a subdial above 6 o'clock combines an aperture-type day display, a pointer-type date display, and a small seconds hand. The lugs connect to the caseback, and the hobnail pattern adorning the entire side of the case is a defining feature.
While an extended power reserve isn't a particularly complex feature, this new manual-winding caliber 31-505 8J PS IRM CI J inherits the basic architecture of the rectangular caliber 28-20 REC 8J PS IRM C J released in 2013. The result of five years of research and development, it incorporates numerous optimized features and innovative technologies, particularly regarding energy consumption management and the instantaneous day/date display. This instantaneous day and date mechanism is borrowed from the Cubitus Instantaneous Oversized Date, Day and Moon Phase Display Ref. 5822P-001, released in October 2024 (equipped with the automatic caliber 240 PS CI J LU).
